I'm saying Wake Me Up When September ends is the MOST pop driven song on the album. If you like Dookie but not American Idiot it would only make sense that you didn't like Wake Me Up When September Ends.

Yeah, I completely agree, I love that song. Each line has such an interesting message, I think.

Summer has come and passed, the innocent can never last.

Summer, of course, is always looked at as a time of freedom, but in the back of your mind know it has to end at some point. Now 'summer' is over, and he has to return to reality.

Kind of like a reflection on his life so far, and how quickly everything has happened.

but why 7 years??

I don't think there's a reason. I think it's just a time they decided to use. They say 20 years later, so I think it's just to point out how fast time goes.

I think it's because when you're 13 you can have sex and he's wishing he had more sex in that 7 years he was able to (he's 20)
