Lots of people say it's a waste of time and use famous guitarists who didn't learn theory as an excuse, but what they don't realize is that Theory doesn't destroy you're creativity, it opens doors to new ideas.

people made me scared to learn theory like that I would never be able to play anything creative if I learned it

Yeah, it's a VERY rare talent to be able to just play and know what sounds right. I'm not saying you can't use accidentals, but still.
